Insider Claims Kevin Costner May Not Return for the Final Yellowstone Episode, But I Have an Idea How the Story Could Go

Yellowstone Episode : The alleged ongoing drama surrounding the final episodes of Yellowstone and Kevin Costner continues. And now it has been claimed that he will not appear in the second half of the show’s fifth season.

It has been rumored before that actor John Dutton could leave after season 5. However, now that it has been confirmed that this installment will be the last of Yellowstone, the actor may not be in the final episodes. If that’s the case, I have an idea how the story can progress without him.

Will Kevin Costner not appear in the final episodes of Yellowstone?

On the October 30 episode of Matthew Belloni’s The Town podcast, he discussed the status of various productions amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. While the actors’ strike came to an end on November 8, both it and the WGA strike have seriously impacted production plans, including Yellowstone. Commenting on when we might see the modern Western again (and it’s important to note that this was before the announcement that season 5 would return in late 2024), the journalist said:

While we now know that the final episodes are projected to arrive on the TV schedule in November of 2024, we still don’t officially know if Costner will star in them. However, Belloni believes he will not do so.

For context, Belloni reported in September that the drama between Costner and Taylor Sheridan escalated after the two had a phone conversation about her future on Yellowstone. The two reportedly tried to work things out and the actor reportedly asked for more money, less schedule and the right to approve scripts, he said. That last point was clearly a non-starter, since Sheridan has full creative control over the show.

Furthermore, fueling the rumor that Costner might not return, the actor said that there is a possibility that he could get sued over these negotiations that allegedly went south. He revealed during the divorce hearing that “there were some issues regarding creativity.” He claimed they “tried to sabotage the proceedings”. They walked away.”

So, if all these rumors prove to be true, it looks like the John Dutton actor will not be returning to the Yellowstone ranch. And if that happens, I have an idea of how the series might progress without him.

How Yellowstone Could Have Moved On Without Kevin Costner
If, and it’s a big deal, Kevin Costner doesn’t return for the final part of the final season of Yellowstone, I think it will be a lot easier to move on. John Dutton has been suffering from cancer recently. If Taylor Sheridan needs to write the actor off the show, eliminating him off-screen is an easy and logical way to do it. Then the primary drama of Yellowstone season 5 will be about the inheritance of the ranch and how the siblings deal with it – just like the final episodes of previous seasons of Succession.

Although I in no way want John Dutton to die on the show, there are several other storylines in Yellowstone that could move the series forward. From Jamie and Beth’s feud to Rip and the Bunkhouse Boys’ trip to the South to take care of the cows and the ongoing issues with market equities, there’s a lot to deal with in the show’s final moments. And, the Yellowstone cast is more than capable of handling it.

Overall, I think it’s possible for Yellowstone to move forward without Kevin Costner, if the rumors of him not appearing in the final episode prove to be true. While we wait to see if John Dutton returns to the farm, you can stream seasons 1 through 5A of the drama with a Peacock subscription. You can also stream other Yellowstone-related shows with a Paramount+ subscription. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we get closer to the Season 5B release date in late 2024.
